Maria Leone, the driving force behind Bodyline, has been teaching Pilates since 1989 and training teachers for well over a decade. She first discovered Pilates at New York University where she holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the prestigious Tisch School of the Arts. Soon after Maria graduated, her dance career led her to Los Angeles where she danced and choreographed with some of the most respected luminaries in the business including Debbie Allen and Paula Abdul. Bodyline was created in 1994 and in 1999 Maria became the certifying teacher in Los Angeles for the PhysicalMind Institute, which was the first national organization to offer Pilates education. In 2013 Maria became part of the faculty for Balanced Body University, the education branch of Balanced Body, the largest Pilates equipment manufacturer in the US.
Maria considers Pilates a mind-body discipline and her approach to teaching is very influenced by her love of dance and the martial arts. She holds a black belt in Tae Kwon Do and integrates her mastery of movement into her training sessions. Lauded for her holistic, integrative approach to the Pilates method, Maria is an internationally recognized teacher and spent extensive time in Saudi Arabia rehabbing clientele. She has been the guest teacher at the Golden Door and Cal a Vie and has presented workshops at both the Pilates Method Alliance and Body Mind international conferences. Maria's expertise in rehabilitative training makes her highly sought after by clients with hip replacements, spinal fusions, and other debilitating ailments. Olympic snowboarder Louie Vito came to Bodyline post surgery specifically to strengthen his lower back. Maria enjoys working with a diverse clientele that includes athletes, philanthropists, celebrities, and Octogenarians. She maintains a philosophy that highlights working with clients as individuals and instructs from a platform that emphasizes education in conjunction with dynamic movement.
Maria and the DVD series she created, Pilates on the Go, have been featured in Allure, Elle, and Fitness Magazine. In addition to the Huffington Post, she has written numerous articles and workout features for Pilates Style magazine. Maria holds Pilates certifications from the Pilates Method Alliance, Balanced Body, PhysicalMind Institute, and the Pink Ribbon Program. Although recognized as a master trainer in her industry, Maria still considers herself a student and continues to hone her craft.
Petia received her Pilates certification under Maria's tutelage in 2010. She then moved to Beijing and opened Body Temple, one of the first Pilates studios in China. In addition to Pilates, Petia holds a degree in Nutritional Science and has experience in clinical nutrition. She has studied a plethora of yoga techniques and has obtained certificates with B. K. S. Iyengar, Chuck Miller, and Jeniffer Wolf. She has studied Traditional Oriental Medicine and various holistic body methods such as Shiatsu, Reiki, Tai Qi, and medical Qigong.
Certified through the PhysicalMind Institute, Jessie has been teaching Pilates for over 20 years. An internationally-renowned ballet dancer, her long list of achievements include 1st prize at the prestigious Prix de Lausanne, silver medalist at the Jackson Mississippi International Ballet Competition and performing with some of the most famed dancers in the world. Throughout her dance career, she studied Pilates in both Hamburg, Germany and New York and began teaching Pilates in Los Angeles in 1991. She is knowledgeable in classical Pilates along with Balanced Body and Stott Pilates. Her sessions are a fusion of strength and stretching exercises focusing on precision and quality of movement. Jessie partnered with Maria Leone for many years running Bodyline Pilates. Whether you are recovering from surgery or training for a triathlon, her sessions will keep you inspired and challenged. Her love of movement is contagious.
Originally from Michigan, Amy began teaching at Bodyline in 1998 and has since become a widely sought-after celebrity trainer. Jennifer Garner, Anne Archer, Rachel Nichols, Oliver Hudson and Kathy Najimy, to name a few. Prior to teaching, she danced professionally throughout the world. When Amy moved to Los Angeles she discovered a "new" exercise method called Pilates, and immediately recognized the joy and power it could impart. Amy received her pilates education at Bodyline, is certified through Physical Mind, and has been a member of the staff ever since. She has written articles for Pilates Style magazine and can be found on Crystal Cruises teaching as a guest instructor. Amy is inspired daily by her clients, and works to create a unique set of exercises that will help each one of them to achieve their individual goals.
Julia Fowler, a former Broadway performer, discovered Pilates in 1996 while rehabbing a dance injury and was later certified to teach Pilates by Maria Leone through the PhysicalMind Institute. She received her Cardiolates certification from Pilates on Fifth in NYC and also completed the National Pink Ribbon Pilates Program certifying her in post breast cancer rehabilitative exercise. Julia is a Pilates Method Alliance member and graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of South Carolina with a B.A. in Theater and Dance. Julia has been featured in Pilates Style Magazine both as a contributing writer as well as a cover model. Julia believes creating a strong, balanced body creates a strong, balanced mind and is inspired every day by the movement journey of her clients. In addition to teaching Pilates, Julia is an actor, writer and producer working in film, TV, theater and the web. Her YouTube “Southern Women Channel” has over 9 million hits and her viral videos have been featured on the Today Show.
Donna Otten started her career as a portrait photographer, graduating with a degree in Photography and working and mentoring with some of the world's most accomplished photographers. In 2001 Donna was involved in a debilitating car accident that left her with multiple complex injuries. She started Pilates for rehabilitation purposes, gaining an immediate appreciation for the healing and strength building effects of practicing Pilates. In 2010 Donna took a hiatus from photography to focus on gaining a deeper understanding of the Pilates practice that helped build and strengthen her mind-body connection. In 2012 she decided to embrace Pilates by training to become a certified teacher and chose Bodyline for her education. Donna received her certification with PhysicalMind and has been part of the staff since 2011.
Stephanie, originally from Los Angeles, grew up in Seattle and Kauai, Hawaii. Stephanie has spent the last 13 years working as a professional dancer and teacher. Notable performances include the Grammys and Dancing With the Stars. Stephanie has also danced with some of today's biggest pop stars including The Rolling Stones, Jane’s Addiction, and Christina Aguilera. While traveling and touring for the past 6 years she credits Pilates with keeping her body and mind in shape and injury free. Fresh off touring and wanting to discover a deeper understanding for Pilates, she looked to master teacher and trainer Maria Leone and Balanced Body University for her Pilates education. Stephanie’s keen eye and ability to zero in on each person’s specific need creates a highly personal and tailor-made workout for any age or physical level.
Marcie is a California girl, born and raised. After receiving her Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from the University of California, Santa Barbara, Marcie moved to Los Angeles. Marcie began her training by completing her Pilates Mat certification through BASI Pilates. She continued her Pilates education by obtaining her Comprehensive Certification through the PhysicalMind Institute under her mentor, Maria Leone. Marcie is also a certified GYROTONIC Instructor, with additional certifications in therapeutic applications. Her experience includes training clients from all walks of life: celebrities, world-class athletes, and people dealing with physical limitations. “Just Keep Going” is Marcie’s mantra and she encourages her clients to do the same.
Hannah has always been passionate about movement. This lead her to a successful dance career of over 15 years. She has toured the world and considers herself lucky to have worked with Paul McCartney, Sting, Jennifer Lopez, and Black Eyed Peas, to name a few. Early in her dance career she fell in love with Pilates. It not only deepened her connection with her body but it improved her sport. Hannah has four years experience teaching barre classes but yearned to work in a more rehabilitative setting with clients. Hannah got her certification with Maria Leone in conjunction with Balanced Body University and is thrilled to be part of the Bodyline team.
Emma Bates teaches mat, group reformer, and private lessons. She got her certification through the PhysicalMind Institute of New York in 2005 and became a certified Post-Operative Breast Cancer Therapist in 2008. She has blogged about this work with The Pilates For Pink Program online at Celebrity Diagnosis. She has a background in the Alexander and Feldenkrais method and Linklater breath work, so her workouts emphasize form and control. Her caring, encouraging teaching style, keen eye for movement, and attention to detail helps her students improve their body awareness and alignment. She also creates exercise modifications to promote greater ease of movement and healthy biomechanics. Emma is dedicated to personalizing exercise programs to help each student reach her full potential in the studio and to carry those skills over to everyday activities.
